First in the world

In 1976, Prof. Keiun Kodo (Huang Ching Yun) and Dr. Watanabe had the world first pure clean spirulina cultivation pool constructed. This is used to mass-produce unpolluted top-grade spirulina. Pro. Keiun Kodo has since accumulated 30 years of experience in spirulina cultivation techniques. He was bestowed the rank of Commandorian Cross of the Sovereign Greek order of Saint Dennis of Zante in 2001 for his enormous contributions to society. He was also awarded the Social Culture Merit Award and International Culture Honour Award in the same year for his invaluable research in spirulina.

How to cultivate quality spirulina

To cultivate high quality spirulina, the cultivation pools must meet certain requirements. One reason why spirulina is being farmed in artificial pools is that the natural lake where it can be found have an uncontrollable growing environment. Such salt lakes have many other microorganisms such as other types of algae growing in it. These can contaminate the spirulina and affect its quality.

For optimal growth and quality, cultivation should take place at a temperature of 30oC to 35oC in mineral rich water (from unpolluted natural sources such as lakes and rivers). There are no preservatives, herbicides, pesticides or artificial products added to the pool to remove weed algae or increase production. This is to ensure that the spirulina is organic, safe to consume and that most of its nutritional content is retained.

Clean fresh water and nutrients must be supplied regularly to feed the spirulina. The water must be stirred and mix evenly. Additional nutrients can be added to the waters, and this includes carbon dioxide, nitrogen, potassium and iron. These can improve the quality of the spirulina cultivated.
